Well, as many of you probably know (thanks to the enormity of kindness shown by my fellow deviants this year), I recently turned 30 years old. Yup, the big three-oh. It's too hard to believe.
Anyway, I won't ramble about my age... I want to share what happened with you!
It began as an ordinary day, and for the most part, it was. As it happened to be a Sunday, though, my brother and his wife and kids were able to come in for the afternoon/evening, and they had all planned to take me on a surprise outing! What was the outing, you may ask? Well, I'll tell you, because this journal wouldn't be serving any purpose if I didn't. We did something I used to love doing when I was a kid, and as it happens it was also something my nieces and nephew had never done before: mini-golfing! There happens to be a mini-golf course only a five-minute walk from where I live, so it was easy to meet him and his family there. The course has changed since I was a kid—it's more about slopes and walls than the windmills and houses it became famous for, but I understand why they changed; the new course allows more people through in less time, so there's less waiting.
After mini-golf, we all went to another childhood favourite place of mine: a restaurant called The Cave, which actually looks and feels like the inside of a cave! They have good pizza, so that's what we ordered.
After supper, we all went home for cake. But it wasn't slab cake, and it wasn't ice cream cake (those of you who remember what happened last year will recall the fabulous Blossom cake I was surprised with), no it was another old favourite of mine: poppyseed cake! Guys, poppy seed cake is one of the best cakes you'll ever taste! It's made in an angel food cake pan, so it's round and tall with a hole in the middle, and it's denser than most cakes. It's almost like coffee cake. Then there's the texture and flavour of all these little poppy seeds mixed inside... but the best part is the gobs of caramel icing drizzled over top of the whole thing! Every bite was like taking a different turn on a trip down memory lane.
So I guess the whole day had an "old-favourites" theme. Which is kinda cool. Oh, and my birthday gift from my folks was a new office chair for my room! Actually, it was a card saying I was to pick out my own office chair and that they'd buy it for me. Funny story: I chose one the next day, and when I built it, it wasn't as comfortable as the demo model I tried out. Plus it started acting funny, so we took it back a few days ago. I guess I'll have to pick out another one.
Oh, and I can't forget to mention the best part of my day:

Not to mention: Ballad's Quest, the Video Game by RyanSilberman!!
That's right—all these lovely gifts from you guys! I can't believe how many there are... this means so much to me I can't say. Thank you to each and every one of you so much! If you drew something for me and it's not up here, let me know and I'll put it on display!

The Second Day of the Rest of My Life
Hello everyone!
First of all, thank you to all of you for your encouraging words in this new branching path of my life. It means a lot to have your support in this endeavour.
Well, the test was over a month ago, and as some of you know, I feel like it went pretty well, aside from a few known mistakes. In fact, it went well enough that I received an email from Statistics Canada saying that my performance on it earned me an interview! JANUARY 16! As amazing as that is, what's even more unbelievable is that the interview will be in my home university—no traveling!!
That was so good to hear, because I've heard that other applicants fro
The First Day of the Rest of My Life
Today is a special day. Today may be looked back on as the day that changed the course of my life.
Back in September, I was being bombarded with things to add to my school load, including an extra class, a side project, and an extra report. All this hullabaloo jump-started a conversation in my mind about where my life was headed, and I started talking to my professors about where I should go with what I have (a Math degree) and what I can get (one of two Statistics degrees). It came to my attention that Statistics Canada (StatCan) was doing their annual national recruitment at the time, so I decided to jump on that too (might as well, wit
